Pope tops Douglas County to win SEBA Fall League Title

The 2012 Southeast Basketball Academy (SEBA) Atlanta Fall League concluded this past weekend with its end of season playoff tournament. The 4th edition of the League was a complete success as it provided all ten teams organized competiton and the opportunity to prepare for the start of the upcoming high school season. The League Championship Game featured the number one seeded (and defending Champion) Douglas County Tigers versus the Greyhounds of Pope High School.

Brothers TJ Hutchins (left) and Chase Hutchins led
Pope to the SEBA Fall League Championship

Douglas County, who enjoyed a perfect 8-0 record coming into the Title Game, knocked off a relentless Blessed Trinity squad in the first Semi-Final by a score of 57-48. In the second Semi-Final, Pope pulled out a 48-44 victory over a tough Creekview squad in a well played contest.

While Pope came into the game as a definite underdog, somebody forgot to tell that to the Greyhounds as they came out very hot and jumped out to an early lead.  Pope's was led by the outstanding contributions of the Hutchins brothers. Senior T.J. Hutchins (6' 5, Forward; 2013) provided excellent play on both ends of the floor, scoring 12 first half points and playing strong interior defense. Standout Sophomore Chase Hutchins (6' 2, PG, 2015) ran the offense very well, scoring and distributing while calmly handling Douglas County's defensive pressure.

Douglas County countered with several comeback runs behind the play of Senior Jalen Thornton (6' 0, CG, 2013) and Sophomore K'Ja Johnson (6' 3, CG, 2015). However, Pope continued to answer the call and proved that this was going to be their day as they continued their fine play and never looked back, winning by the final score of 64-50. Pope's Andrew Mendell (17 points) and Devo Bizzard (14 points) played a big role in the Pope victory. TJ Hutchins finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Chase Hutchins scored 15 points and had 6 assists.  Jalen Thornton led Douglas County with 15 points and K'Ja Johnson scored 12 points.

2012 SEBA Atlanta Fall League Champions

Additional Notes / Observations:

  • Douglas County graduated four standout seniors off last year's 26 win team that are now playing college basketball. While this year's team will be inexperienced; Coach Joby Boydstone has alot of young talent to work with and the future is very bright. Despite their youth; Look for the Tigers to be right in the mix for a Region 3-AAAAAA crown.
  • Pope will also have a host of younger players stepping into new roles this year; however, they have excellent chemistry and will be very well coached under Pat Abney. Look for them to make noise in a well balanced Region 7-AAAAA.
  • The Championship Game featured Two 2015 Prospects with excellent potential. Pope's Chase Hutchins is a skilled guard with good size who can get to the rim and has a very impressive court awareness for a young player. Johnson is gifted athlete who attacks the rim very well and has excellent body control. With continued development both players have a chance to be among the top guard prospects in Georgia's 2015 class.

2012 SEBA Atlanta College Showcase (Review - Part I)

SEBA College Showcase - Top 30 All-Star Game "East" Squad

College prospects from throughout the nation descended upon Oglethorpe University this past weekend to participate in the 2012 SEBA Atlanta College Showcase. The 7th Annual Event featured a full capacity roster of 180 players representing the entire state of Georgia as well as Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, and Maryland. The camp featured a large number of high quality and available Class of 2012 Senior prospects, as well as some impressive 2013 and 2014 underclassman talent. In addition, there were a number of 5th year Prep players on the roster looking to advance to the next level. Competition was fierce, as every player was eager to demonstrate their talent to the many college coaches in attendance.

Below is a summary on the Camps Top Performers:

(Players Listed in no particular order)

Emmanuel Ezoua (6’ 3, Wing, Lanier County, 2012)
High motor prospect who plays with exceptional energy, enthusiasm, and athleticism. Immigrated to the U.S. from Cote d’Ivoire (Africa). The passion he has for playing the game of basketball was evident throughout the day. Was a tough matchup for opponents throughout the day as he is quick off the dribble to the bucket, but also has very good physical strength allowing him to overpower smaller players. Led Lanier County to Georgia’s Class A Final Four; 1600 Point Career Scorer. Named 1st Team All-State by AJC.

Vantrail Commings (6’ 4, Wing, Douglas County, 2012)
Powerful and extremely physical wing-forward with versatile skill set. Finishes extremely well in and around the rim. Top notch rebounder who plays 3-4 inches “taller” than his height. Excellent passer at his position; plays with a great motor and enthusiasm. Natural Leader. Coming off excellent Senior season at Douglas County where he averaged 18 ppg and 12 rbg. Named Region Player of Year and 2nd Team All-State in AAAA.

Andrew Fishler (6’ 11, Forward, Forsyth Central, 2012)
Legitimate big man prospect with surprising mobility. Made biggest impact on defensive end of floor where he either blocked or altered shots consistently throughout the day. Is a fairly quick jumper off his feet and times release of shot well. He set state record with blocks in single game this past season (19). While far from a finished project on offensive end, he showed ability to score with his back to the basket. Will be excellent for a program needing a true post player with upside potential.

Derick Pope (6’ 5, Wing, Grayson, 2012)
High flying athletic wing who drew attention with slashing ability and numerous highlight reel dunks. Excels in transition; can initiate fast break with rebound and finish on other end. Showed ability to consistently knock down the mid-range jumper as well score on the low block. Strong work ethic. Another late bloomer who has improved significantly over past year. His best basketball is certainly ahead of him. Academic standout with 3.7 GPA and 28 ACT score.

One coach commented on his hunger and desire to improve during skill stations. True “Diamond in the Rough".

Deandre Harper (6’ 6, Wing, Alexander, 2012
Impressive wing guard who can score light up the scoreboard and was one of the camp’s top prospects.. After struggling somewhat with his shot during his team’s first camp game; he came out on fire in second game and hit five (5) consecutive three-pointers attempts. Many of the college coaches in attendance were impressed with his combination of length and offensive skill set. He does have the tendency to settle for long outside shot attempt, when he has the capability to attack the rim.

Fineto “Andy” Lunguana (6’ 3, SG, Centennial, 2012)
Extremely athletic guard prospect with excellent speed and leaping ability. Had a good all-around performance throughout the day. Shot the three ball consistently well and with good elevation. Adonai Rogers (6’ 2, CG, Berkmar, 2012)
Athletic and wiry guard prospect who scored the ball very well throughout the day. At his best when slashing to bucket, but also capable at mid-range, and from the three. Had stretches during camp where he took over the game and scored in bunches; including an impressive multi-dunk sequence on back-to-back possessions. Has good body control. Will need to add some weight to slender frame for next level. Named 1st Team All-Gwinnett County and was instrumental piece in Berkmar’s run to Elite Eight this past season.

Connor Smith (6’ 2, CG, St. Francis, 2012)
Skilled combo guard with impressive perimeter skill set. Deceptively athletic player who is capable of making plays above the rim. After being home schooled for the first three years of high school; Connor played this year at St. Francis and was named 1st team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State this past season. Has improved significantly over the past 12 months and is just now starting to come into his own as a player.

Richard Kelly (6’ 5, SG/SF, Douglas County, 2012)
Highly athletic wing guard who demonstrates the potential to be dominant force on the floor. Has excellent bounce off floor and is an above the rim finisher. Excellent in transition; runs the floor extremely well. Shot the ball very well from the wing in afternoon games. Very good rebounder from wing spot. Needs to continue to develop on-court awareness and playing under control; this will help with consistency issues. Very coachable kid with good work ethic. High achiever in classroom with 3.7 GPA.

Tobiasz Hose (6’ 4, Point Guard, Brunswick, 2012)
Intriguing prospect from South/Coastal Georgia; Lead guard with excellent size and skill set. Showed above average ability to score, dribble, and distribute. Converted from all three scoring zones and demonstrated good athleticism with a couple of impressive dunks. Has good instincts and reaction. Good frame for wing player. Had strong senior season averaging over 17 ppg. Late bloomer.

Kelly Scores 26 pts; Douglas County Remains Undefeated

Richey Kelly (6' 5, Douglas County; 2012)
SEBA's Richard Kelly scored 26 points in Douglas County's 104-95 victory over Kell High School. The extremely athletic wing scored on a variety of drives, jumpers, putbacks, and fast break attempts. The victory improves Douglas County's record to a perfect 14-0. The Tigers are currently ranked #3 in Georgia's Class AAAA Poll.

Kelly is uncommitted and will sign in the Spring. He is certainly one of the top available 2012 Wing Guards in the State. In addition to his on-court talents, Richard is a terrific student in the classroom, where he has a 3.8 GPA.

Look for Douglas County to make a deep playoff run next month. The Tigers, led Head Coach  Joby Boydstone, have a deep cast of talented seniors which includes standout Forwards Vantrail Commings and Jaumonee Byrd, Point Guard Devante Orebeau, and Kelly.

Atkins Averaging 25 PPG; Leads Vidalia to # 1 Ranking

Devin Atkins (2012 - PG; Vidalia High)
Senior Guard Devin Atkins (5' 7, PG, Vidalia, 2012) is having a fantastic senior season for Vidalia High School. Atkins is averaging 25 ppg for the Indians, who are currently 15-1 and ranked as the state's # 1 team in Class AA (according to latest Atlanta Journal Constitution poll). He might very well be the top outside shooter in the Peach State, as is converting an eye popping 50% of shot attempts from three-point land (65 for 130). This is despite seeing double teams almost every game. Atkins is more than an outside threat. He handles the ball well, has the ability to keep the defense honest with penetration, and has an effective floater in the lane.

Head Coach Tommy Dalley is one of the State's Top Coaches and in three years has built the Vidalia program into a genuine AA State Power. In addition to this year's terrific start, the Indians finished with an impressive 24-5 record last season. Atkins has been a major factor in that success. The three year starter, who was named First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State last year as a Junior, has stepped into a featured role this season.

At 5' 7", Atkins is never going to be the tallest player on the floor. But he almost always brings "big" game.  Atkins could be a very nice pickup for college coach seeking a PG who can score. Be on the lookout for Vidalia to be a strong contender for the 2A State Crown this March!
