Douglas County outlasts Walton in SEBA Fall League Championship Game

Fall Leagues can be an excellent tool for teams to develop team chemistry and help teams prepare for the start of the regular high school season. The Southeast Basketball Academy (SEBA) Atlanta Fall League did just that for all of the participating teams over the course of the past two months. The SEBA League concluded this past weekend with its end of season playoff tournament, where Walton High School and Douglas County did battle in the Championship Game. Douglas County cruised past Pope 62-40 in the first Semi-Final; while Walton held off an athletic North Cobb squad 60-55 in the other Semi-final game.

Vantrail Commings (6' 4, Wing; Douglas County; 2012)
The Championship Game itself was a hard fought contest played with much intensity. The majority of the first half saw both teams going back and forth and exchanging leads. It wasn't until the three minute mark of the 2nd quarter when the uptempo Douglas County squad took a double digit advantage behind the all around standout play of Vantrail Commings (6' 4, Wing, 2012) and strong inside production of Jaumonee Byrd (6' 6, Forward; 2012).

Rico Overall (6' 1; PG, Walton; 2013)
The Tigers extended the lead throughout the third quarter and the first two minutes of the fourth. However, Walton was not ready to surrender. Behind the tremendous play of Junior Point Guard Rico Overall (6' 1, PG, 2013), the Raiders staged a ferocious comeback. Overall was all over the floor; converting drives, hitting pull ups, dishing out assists, and picking off steals. Walton pulled to within two points inside the final two minutes; however, Douglas County stepped up and made some big defensive stops as well as knocking down some crucial free throws down the stretch. The final score was Douglas County 78 and Walton 73.

Douglas County was led by Commings 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. They also received strong play Richard Kelly (6' 5, Wing, 2012) who had 15 points, Byrd (15 points), Matt Melms (12 points), and
Devante Orebeau (10 points and 4 assists).

Walton was led by Rico Overall's 27 points and 5 assists. Powerfully built strong forward senior Sean Morgan (6'6, Forward, 2012) scored 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds to cap off a very good Fall Season. John Gibson (6' 7, Forward, 2012) added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

 Additional Notes / Observations:
  • Douglas County has a chance to be strong contender in Georgia's Class AAAA this year. The Tigers have excellent athleticism, size and seasoned players. Head Coach Joby Boydstone returns all five starters from a year ago, including Vantrail Commings and Richard Kelly who were All-Region as Juniors.
  • Walton does not have the High profile Major D1 player they had the past few years; however look for Coach Joe Goydish's to remain in the mix as one of the better squads in AAAAA. This year's squad has a dominating forward in Sean Morgan and a high quality playmaker in Rico Overall to go along with good overall team chemistry. Emerging 6' 7" forward John Gibson might be the x-factor.
  • Douglas County's Vantrail Commings (pictured above) has received significant football recruiting interest from Major Division I schools. However, basketball is his passion and he may prefer to play hoops at the next level. Commings is a beast on the floor on the hardwood. Is 6' 4, but plays much bigger and with a tremendous motor.
